Oldcastle race report and category prizes

On Wednesday evening last the town of Oldcastle played host to runners and walkers when St Brigids AC hosted the inaugural Oldcastle 5K for the Marie Monaghan Memorial Cup. During the day the town was been judged for the National Pride of Place award and in the evening the residents got to judge the Athletic talent in the area. Shortly after 8pm just over 500 participants made there way down the hill out of the town for a 1k loop around St Brigids terrace before returning back up the hill to the centre of town by which time Andrew Ledwith had opened up a 50m lead on the chasing group. As Andrew made his way effortlessly through town everyone marvelled at the way the reining National half marathon champion made running look so easy. The large chasing group were running for 2nd place at this stage with Cavan runners Martin Fulton and Cian O Reilly leading from Michael Brabazon Thomas Moran Derek Croal and John Downes. As the runners made there way out the Kells road and across the narrow Stoney road Andrew continued to increase his lead as Tommy Maher and Kevin Baker led the chasing group. Entering the last Kilometre Andrew was well clear but second place was still anyone’s, as Andrew came up the slight incline in the last 100m Thomas Moran had moved into second with John Downes and Kevin Baker battling it out for third. Downes passed Baker on the final incline to take third with Thomas Moran holding on for a fine second place. Imelda Clarke was the first lady home with Brigid Clarke second and Cindy Hickey third. St Brigids AC and the Monaghan Family would like to thank everyone who took part or helped on the night.
