Meath Athletes made the trip to Castleisland in Kerry for Round 1 of the AAI Track & Field league. The rain cleared early to give a good day for track & field competition. There were many good performances from the Meath athletes, Mark Hoey won the 5000m in a new Pb of 15.09 and is capable of breaking 15min this summer. Rory McDonnell who won the Patrick Bell 5K the previous night got a flight down to Kerry Sunday morning and gained 7 points with a second place finish in the 3k steeplechase. Ger Nagle finished 2nd in the Shot and Discus in his first competition of the season. Niall Matthews finished 4th in the 400m in just over 50sec and Joey Monaghan ran well in the 100 and 200m.Shane Aston 4th High jump and Chris Higgins 6th in the long jump both performed well in there first Senior competition for the County. The mens team finished 6th overall and will need a strong performance in Round 2 on the 17th of July not to get relegated.
Rosie Daniel lead the way for the Ladies team with a win in the High Jump with a clearance of 1.65m and a 3rd place finish in the Triple Jump. There were also top Three finishes for Brigid Clarke in the 3000m in 10.44 and Grace o Sullivan in the Javelin. Grainne Miggin made a return to the Hammer and finished 4th with a throw of 37.79m. Ciara Grant, Karen Blaney and Ciara Rooney all competed on the County Senior Team for the first time and gained valuable points for the team. The Ladies team are also in 6th place and will have to work hard the next day not to get relegated.
