Busy times at Dunboyne AC

AAI throwing permit meet, on Saturday March 3rd 2012
Last Saturday 3rd March was an eventful occasion at Dunboyne Athletics Club for the many Irish Hammer Throwers who used the clubs all weather track facilities to demonstrate their skills.
This was a fantastic opportunity to see top class junior and senior athletes, as well as improvers, performing their best in hammer and discus. The newly built Olympic hammer cage gives now throwers the best facilities and conditions to develop their performance, abilities and skills.
Hammer and Discus are among the eight Olympic field events which deserve to be better known, and just like any other sport, you'll find men and women, parents who are involved and they are always willing to chat with anyone to explain the rules, the history and share their passion. One of our expert Throwers is Betty Cunningham has been member of Dunboyne AC for more than 20 years. Betty regularly competes at national level representing Dunboyne AC. She was helping the officials and could tell a lot about her sport, Betty commented “There is an Irish tradition of throwing the hammer and the roots of the sport can be found in the ancient Celtic times”.
Swinging the furthest isn't as easy as it looks, because the competitor is confined into a 2.135m size circle, rotates in an ellipsis with a 7.257 kg metal ball (4 kg for women) attached to a thin wire that the athlete holds onto with both hands. The attempt is successful only if the ball stays in the throwing zone. The principle is the same with Discus.
Irish International Hammer Thrower Padraig White (Dunboyne AC) was one of the favourites to win the Hammer contest, he finished 2nd with a 63.90M throw, 5cm short from his personal best. Padraig was looking forward to this competition in Duboyne, as he explained few days ago “it is very important that we have an annual winter throws event here in Ireland. It will give the throwers an opportunity to break up the winter training and put down a mid season mark.”
International Junior athlete James McCabe (Dunboyne AC) led his category with a 64M throw for his first competition of the year. Like his club mate Padraig, James wanted to do a self assessment and check his progress during the winter. His 2012 season target is the IAAF World Junior Championships in Barcelona, then it would add another major event to his list of successes, after his bronze medal in the Hammer Throw at the Woodie’s DIY AAI Senior track and field championships last summer.
National athlete Caimin Dunne also had a good throw on the day. Let's remember that Caimin attempted All Ireland Championship last year and was 2nd in his category U19.
In the Discus contest, Michael Hanlon, competing as well at national level under the Dunboyne AC colors, achieved a 42M throw for his first competition of 2012, ranking 1st Junior. Last year, Michael was selected for the National Juvenile Track and Field Championships and claimed a bronze in the U17.
After the competition, the athletes were invited to the clubhouse for refreshment and sandwiches.

Half Marathon - Bohermeen on Sun 04/02/2012
Dunboyne AC was well represented at the Bohermeen Half Marathon. The race gave our runners the opportunity to make their final adjustments in preparation for the Connemara Half Marathon and giving them a final boost. The course consisted of two laps, designed for both elite and fun runners. The weather conditions were ideal, dry and chilly for most of the race.
Our coach Garry O'Hanlon of Clonliffe Harriers won the race in the 1:10:51, well ahead of his competitors. Let's remember that Garry finished third last week at the Woodie's DIY Inter-Club CC Championship.
First home for Dunboyne AC was Rory Kavanagh who has all the reasons to be happy with his first half marathon finishing with a superb time of 1:19:05. Rory who joined Dunboyne AC couple of months ago, played GAA and soccer for many years, shows strong running skills and a bright future in athletics. No doubt he will have other successes with other races.

Male athletes of Dunboyne AC did achieve great times:
Alan Mc Kernan 1:26:12 (PB)
Paul Gorey 1:31:44
Warren Mc Intyre 1:36:42 (PB)
Seamus Dunne 1:36:58
Scott Willoughby 1:41:11
Ray Mitchell 1:44:47 (PB)
Michael O'Baille 1:47:14 (PB)
The female race was dominated by Pauline Curley of Tullamore Harriers (1:18:58), the first woman home. Emilia Dan (Dunboyne AC) obtained 2nd female home and 1st female in her age category. Emilia had good legs and stamina to drive her race with cleverness. Third at the 5 mile mark, she kept her energy for the second lap, overtook her competitor and never looked back. Crossing the line in 1:27:51 (PB), Emilia was rewarded for her commitment and hard training.
Five other female athletes were well representing the club and enjoyed the route.
Deidre Fitzsimons 1:37:25
Eileen Thoma 1:38:23
Aoiffe Kerrigan 1:42:44 (PB)
Michelle Robson 1:47:38 who was running with her sister in law.
Anne Gorman 1:56:56

The Dunboyne squad met in Bohermeen Community Centre for the after race refreshment. This was a time for a relaxed chat with club peers and other athletes, exchanging the race stories and congratulating one another.

In other news within the Women’s Meet and Train the final results were posted with Eileen Thoma coming joint 2 overall and Dunboyne AC finishing 3rd in the Gold category.
