PRO Report to 2012 convention.

The past year has been quite good for the promotion of athletics in the
county. The Meath running league continues to improve in terms of numbers
taking part and new races on the calendar. There were a number of
developments during the year which benefitted the club running scene in
Meath. Most notable were the comprehensive results and race report features
which the Meath Chronicle began last spring. The photographic coverage and
the full classified results from local road races gave the sport a great PR
boost. The decision of many local clubs to use chip timing facilitated these
features and is to be encouraged. During the past year Meath clubs and their
events featured very prominently in the  FIT magazine supplement which comes
with the Irish Independent each Thursday.

These are positive developments which represent opportunities to bring more
people into the club system. The clubs need to reach out and encourage new
comers into the sport. The revival of road running, meet and train groups
and the return to grassroots sport presents clubs with fresh opportunities.
There are many former athletes now coming back into the club system and this
can have long term benefits particularly for underage athletics. Family
traditions and allegiances count for a lot in sport.

. The races of county Meath are well noted for their hospitality and good
organisation. These factors are important when attracting support. Club
races offer the new runner something different. Lets play to our strengths.
In the current economic climate I would encourage clubs to be mindful of how
they price their races and how they distribute their prizes. Lets ensure
that value for money is another positive aspect of Meath races which will
ensure their continued support.

There are areas for improvement in the coverage of underage track and field.
I feel that the board should be using the schools competition to better
effect. We need to examine how the board and its clubs can derive greater
benefit from work of the development workers. The relationship between the
MLSP and the sport in Meath has great potential and could benefit both
parties. Promotion of local clubs through the schools, meet and train groups
and at events need to be improved and can be by cooperating with schools,
community groups, the community games organisation and the MLSP. The two new
clubs in the county Rathkenny and Duleek made their presence felt from the
word go. Well done to all involved.

The chip timing of the Leinster cross country championships this year was a
great development. It enabled clubs get their results and reports in to the
media much quicker than in the past. Speed is of the essence when you want
coverage. When this is coupled with a report and a few photographs the local
press a very cooperative.

I would like to thank my colleagues on Meath Athletics Board , the Sports
Development office staff , and the club PROs who provided me with results,
reports and photographs during the year.
Thanks to the Meath Chronicle, LMFM, Irish Runner, FIT magazine in the Irish
Independent, Drogheda Independent, Lindie Naughton, Frank Greally, John
Quirke, Racepix365, Leinster Athletics all the media outlets for their
cooperation, coverage and support during the past year.

AVIVA School Mile Challenge

With 82 schools to date participating in the AVIVA School Mile Challenge and over 10,000 wristbands already distributed this is proving to be a big hit with teachers countrywide.

The event provides a superb opportunity for schools to support an initiative to encourage teenagers to get a taste of recreational participation in sport. This is all about taking part in a healthy form of exercise. There is a fun competitive element also as we will be looking at categories like best schools, counties and provinces...we may even uncover the next sub-4 minute miler, but that is incidental to the main purpose which is to promote running or walking as part of a balanced healthy lifestyle.
The event is being run as a joint promotion of the Irish Schools Athletic Association, Athletics Ireland and AVIVA. Each school chooses its own time to run the event. It can be done during or after school and ideally should be run on the school grounds. It can be done by athletes only or as a whole school activity. It is the responsibility of the school to mark out the course, run the event, do all the administration associated with it and then send on the information on a spreadsheet. The school  then receives the wristbands which are colour co-ordinated to reflect the time of the competitor. There are different times for boys and girls to reflect their different aerobic capacities.
This initiative is part of our “Fit for Life” programme and encourages all pupils while at school to participate. The idea of running a mile and receiving a coloured coded wristband in accordance with the time achieved has to be one of the best ideas of spreading a love of running to young people. Pupils are encouraged to train for the event and to repeat the exercise and thereby improve on their time.
So far Rice College, Westport with 58 Red Wristbands have posted the best times. But it’s not only about how fast but how many take part and another Connacht School, St Claire’s Comprehensive, Manorhamilton, had a turn-out of 433 pupils. 519 girls from Loreto, Fermoy took the Challenge. Let’s get more schools taking part in this fitness initiative.
Apply to johnshields@athleticsireland.ie to receive all the information and get the young people of Ireland taking up running/walking as a healthy pastime.
We have had a great response from those schools who have participated already. Some of their comments are posted below:
Please find attached the spreadsheet containing the list of participants in our recent 'AVIVA School Mile Challenge' in St. Clare's Comprehensive, Manorhamilton, Co. Leitrim.
We had an overwhelming response; students have been training on a regular basis during three lunch-breaks every week since the event was announced.  We had many seasoned runners and many first times, who hopefully have a new, found interest in running.
It has been a fantastic positive event for our school.
Thank you for facilitating the event.
Sandra Carden, St Claire’s Manorhamilton, Co Leitrim.
We have already run our 1st year Mile Challenge like we did for Kip Keino last year.  It worked really well.  We used this Mile Challenge to have our Team for next week’s Community School Cross Country.  We also got the First 20 Boys and 20 Girls to finish to run in the World Marathon Challenge on Tuesday on Tallaght Track.  It was a great event - our Marathon time of 2 hours 14 minutes and some seconds.
We also have our 2nd Year team for the Cross Country as we are using the results from Kip Keino run last year.
Your Mile Challenge has been great in our school and students look forward to it.  Great sense of achievement and the wristbands really work.  We also make sure to recognise all who complete it and not just use it as a Competition.
Enda Timoney, St. Mark's Community School, Tallaght.

The School Mile Challenge was held last Friday and was very enjoyable for all involved.
I have attached an excel sheet with all the results. Before the challenge I stressed that the main purpose was to encourage students to get up and get active by running or walking... as you will see in the results walking was the preferred choice of most students. Don’t think we'll have anyone going to the next Olympics but if was a great afternoon.
Anton Walsh, Collinstown Community College, Clondalkin.
Hi John,
We did the Mile Challenge on Tuesday 23rd October 2012.
It was a fantastic day for us. As you can see, a huge number took part, students and staff. We had the event in the Listowel Town Park which is just over a mile in perimeter.
This is a great idea, which we hope to continue as part of our Health Awareness Week every year.
Thanks for the invitation to take part. Can you send on the Wrist Bands as soon as you can, the boys and some Teachers are very proud of their times and are looking for that coveted Wrist Band.
Yours in Sport,
Liam Hassett, St. Michael's College, Listowel, Co. Kerry.

The pupils from St Michael’s, Listowel, Co Kerry taking the “Challenge”.
John,
Please find attached the scores from the Athletics Mile Challenge we ran in our school last Wednesday November 28th.
328 children took part.
I would like to thank you very much John for this event. The kids enjoyed it greatly and they will be taking part in the event again later in the year.
Thanks,
Shane Luby St.Joseph's N.S., Templerainey, Arklow, Co.Wicklow.

Registrars Report 2012

Membership in Meath is rising steadily.  The increase in 2012 membership is 27%, compared to an increase of 20% nationwide.

For the first time our total membership has exceeded 3,000, due in no small part to the hard work of club officials, coaches and officers throughout the county.  There is a strict ethos of registering all members, strongly supported by the Chairman.  This ethos will help to give weight to our presence as a major sporting body within the county.  It will also help us push through agendas that are important to us as an Association with extra voting strength at Congress.

As with all sporting organisations, there is a transient membership, particularly in the younger age groups.  The faces change from year to year as juveniles drift from one sport to another, or give up sport altogether.  The challenge to us is to provide programme and environment that encourages them to stay in the sport.

I would like, at this point, to mention Duleek and Rathkenny Athletic Clubs.  Both clubs have grown their membership substantially from a standing start and have been a welcome addition to the county.

Congratulations to Dunboyne on exceeding 500 members this year.  Ratoath are not far behind with 416 in what has been a very busy developmental year for the club.

Finally I would like to thank the Chairman for his support throughout the year.  I’m not sure how he maintains his (mostly) good humour.  I wish him the best of luck in the coming year.  Also thanks to fellow County Officers, and particular thanks to the hardworking club registrars, keep it up!

DEVELOPMENT OFFICERS REPORT 2012 Convention

DEVELOPMENT OFFICERS REPORT to 2012 Convention

by Bridget Clarke and Maggie Higgins

The secondary schools Track & Field competition was held on 18th April in Claremont Stadium.  18 schools were involved this year, the same number as last year.  St Patricks Classical School took the boys’ school title a first for them and Scoil Mhuire retained the girls’ title for the second year.
The secondary schools Cross Country competition was held on the 17th November.  This was our third year to run this competition in November.  Unfortunately there was a secondary schools soccer tournament on the same day in Gormanston and it did take from the numbers that competed on the day.  However, 20 schools did compete, an increase of 4 on last years figures and some schools had more athletes competing than in previous years.  As always the grounds and conditions at Gormanston College were in perfect condition.
The final of the primary schools Cross Country competition will take place next March.  The wet weather conditions has played havoc with some of the preliminary rounds.  It is hoped to run the primary schools relay competition shortly after Easter.  Details will be circulated nearer to the time.
There has been much discussion about the Little Athletics Programme in the primary schools and it has been agreed to now shift the emphasis onto the secondary schools.  We would like to take this opportunity to thank Paul, Moira and Maria for the great presentation of athletics that they gave to both the teachers and children.  It is both essential and beneficial to be able present children with the option of athletics as well as the other usual sports.  Hopefully the secondary schools will be as receptive as the primary schools to the programme.
We would also like to take this opportunity to thank all the girls in the office, in particular Ita and Oprah, who do a lot of work in the organisation of our two secondary school events.  Thanks also to all the volunteers from the clubs who help out at all the events, without whose help it would be impossible to organise.
It has been said that the above schools competition do not benefit the county or clubs in that we do not gain any new athletes from them.  Yes maybe we do not gain in numbers however, the schools certainly appreciate these events.  While there are individuals within the schools willing to promote athletics is it not our duty then as a county to aid them in that.  If we as the athletic board are not willing to promote athletics then who will?  We constantly give out about the lack of promotion athletics gets within the media so if we stop the little we are doing, we will become invisible.

RESULTS from Meath senior CC and relays

On  a day ideal for cross country running there were some great performances
in the Meath senior cross country championships. The course which had all
the right ingredients and gradients for championship racing was in great
condition for the final event of the season.

In the senior mens race Darragh Rennicks returned from his Kansas college
for his county champiosnhip and carried the colours of Bohermeen with pride
to another fine county senior title. He was a joy to watch powering out from
the gun in the company of Luke Forde, Dunboyne. He extended his lead in the
mid section of the race as Robbie Matthews, Dunshaughlin patiently worked
his way into the silver medal spot. The eventual third placed man Eoin
Callaghan continued his impressive return to competitive athletics by taking
third and leading his team mates Rob Tully, Andrew Coscoran and brother Neil
Callaghan from Star of the Sea to a great win in the team event.

In the womens event Fiona Mahon put in a storming performance score an
impressive win. Fiona recently returned to the  Meath club scene when she
joined Dunshaughlin AC.and led their team to the club title with Shauna
Moran, Linda Fahey and Shauna Moore. Emilia Dan, Dunboyne AC put in another
great run for second and club mate Karen O Hanlon took third spot.

Rennicks and Mahon senior winners

On  a day ideal for cross country running there were some great performances in the Meath senior cross country championships. The course which had all the right ingredients and gradients for championship racing was in great condition for the final event of the season.

In the senior mens race Darragh Rennicks returned from his Kansas college for his county champiosnhip and carried the colours of Bohermeen with pride to another fine county senior title. He was a joy to watch powering out from the gun in the company of Luke Forde, Dunboyne. He extended his lead in the mid section of the race as Robbie Matthews, Dunshaughlin patiently worked his way into the silver medal spot. The eventual third placed man Eoin Callaghan continued his impressive return to competitive athletics by taking third and leading his team mates Rob Tully, Andrew Coscoran and brother Neil Callaghan from Star of the Sea to a great win in the team event.

In the womens event Fiona Mahon put in a storming performance score an impressive win. Fiona recently returned to the  Meath club scene when she joined Dunshaughlin AC.and led their team to the club title with Shauna Moran, Linda Fahey and Shauna Moore. Emilia Dan, Dunboyne AC put in another great run for second and club mate Karen O Hanlon took third spot.
