NEW GOLD TEAM Meath womens master cross country national title

The third major national cross country meeting of the season took place on Sunday at the ALSAA complex near Dublin Airport.  There was a thirteen race programme to decide the Woodie’s DIY Intermediate, Juvenile B, Masters and Celtic International  schools championships. The well laid out course took the runners along the mostly flat playing fields of the airport sports complex. But the three days of rain leading up to the event made running more difficult as the day passed.  It’s no exaggeration to say that going which a racing correspondant would term heavy would be described in any number of terms during and after todays races by cross country runners.
The master womens race was  the best performance by Meath runners today.  The county  team took top spot  and the Na Fianna members of the county squad combined to take second place in the club competition.  Both teams were led home by Mary Hanley who put in a great effort to finish sixth overall  in a race won by Annette Kealy, Raheny Shamrocks.  The next Meath finisher was Ursula Byrne, Dunshaughlin AC who had her best ever run to finish ninth in a national championship. The great effort by Mary Hanley for her club was enhanced by  the addition of this years great find Imelda Clarke who is a novice in experience but a master in ability.  The Na Fianna lineup was completed by Brigid Clarke, Maggie Higgins, Margaret Neary and Ann Marie McCluskey. The other members of the county squad were Mary Watters, and Ann Tobin.
There was a lot of experience at the forefront of the mens masters team. The county  team included such seasoned cross country campaigners as Tommy Maher, M45, Noel Hanratty, M55. They were well to the fore in their individual age groups with Maher claiming the bronze in the M45 and 6th overall.Noel Hanratty was just 10 seconds off the bronze when fourth in M55. Paddy Mangan and Mark Leacy put in great performances for Meath’s cause.
There were just two Meath athletes in the intermediate womens race. Sharon Monaghan put in a strong run to finish 16th while Linda Fahy was 31st. Linda Fahys Dunshaughlin colleague Shauna Moore earned her first international vest when selected to run in the Celtic International race. The promising Dunshaughlin runner was eleventh in the Under 20 womens event.
In the final race of the day the underfoot conditions were akin to a bad day at the national ploughing championships. The twelve previous races had taken their toll. The county team finished 5th on 250 points in the mens intermediate race. The top Meath placed runner was the improving Loughlin Campion in eighteenth place. The St Andrews athlete  has just moved up from the junior ranks and passed up on taking part in the Universities Indoors at Nenagh on Saturday to run for the county intermediates. The recently formed Slane Athletics club had an auspicious start with club founder Ronan Wogan acquitting himself very well in the national intermediate with twenty first place. Dunboyne AC entered a club team in this race and former hurling ace Neville Reilly swopped sliotar for slither to lead Morgan McDonagh and veteran clubmates Phelim Glynn and Sean Kinane around the tough ten kilometre course. The other Meath runners were Kevin Reilly, 54th;Robert Caffrey,66th.
In the under 17 boys Celtic International the top Irish finisher was Andrew Coscoran in fourth place. This is the latest great result from the Star of the Sea athlete who has proven to be a star of the country this winter. In the juvenile B championships which preceded the adult races the boys under 11s were third in the inter counties and second in the under 13s.

Sheila Mallon 2011 president

Sheila Mallon, Bohermeen AC has been chosen as the honorary president of Meath Athletics Board for 2011. She received her chain of office from the outgoing president Paddy Joyce, Cushinstown AC at the Meath Athletics Board 2011 Convention in Claremont Stadium on Wednesday 2 February. Sheila was described by county board chairman, Brendan Meade as an ever present worker for her club Bohermeen AC. She occupied the role of county registrar for the many years. He said every event promoted by Bohermeen AC benefits from her guidance and help. She epitomises the great voluntary spririt of Irish sport.
Sheila told the meeting that she was honoured to be chosen and was looking forward to attending the various events in her role over the next year. She thanked the delegates and her club .
On handing over the chain of office Paddy Joyce was particularly pleased to see many children and now grandchildren of people he has met in the sport down the years carrying on the athletics tradition. He was also pleased to be in the company of people outside of the competitive envirnment at the county awards night.

Marathon effort in Kiltale

The most famous sportsman to come out of the parish of Kiltale is Dessie
McGann. He has been a familiar sight training on the roads around the Meath
village for decades. His marathon efforts from Munich 1972 must have been an
inspiration for another marathoner Tommy Maher (Dunshaughlin AC) from nearby Batterjohn who
was one of Irelands top distance men in the 80s and 90s.

The urge to go the distance must be part of the local spirit because another
generation of marathon runners has cropped up at the local national school.
Last September Rose Cullen, the principal of Kiltale national school and
Catherine McLernon, a teachers assistant at the school set up an athletics
programme at the school. The plan was for all the children to complete a
marathon over a series of running sessions during the autumn and early
winter.Every pupil in the school from infants class right up to sixth
completed their own multi stage marathon and on Thursday 3rd February they
were honoured at a presentation following the final run out.

It was a joy to see the enthusiasm of the entire school as they set out to
complete the final leg of their run for marathon glory. They were buzzing
with anticipation at assembly. For many of them their first sports medal is
the one they will most treasure. All the teaching staff came out to
encourage and support their pupils and were full of praise for the
initiative.

Johnny Gorman, chairman of the parents association,  Ciaran Tobin, PRO Meath
Athletics and school principal Rose Cullen paid tribute to the packed
assembly of happy children on their great efforts. The parents association
provided each young runner with a lovely certificate of achievement and
medal. The school is now eager to send out its best team to the Meath
primary
schools cross country in March. Well done and good luck to all.

Ratoath success at masters undoor championships

Colm Keogh (Ratoath AC) completed an impressive double at the national indoor masters championships over the weekend winning the V1 60m in 7.64 sec and the 200m in 25.03. Making an impressive return to competition after an absence of a few years was Peter Doherty (Ratoath AC) who finished 3rd in the V1 60m in a time of 7.90 sec.

Secretary’s Report Meath County Athletics Board Convention 2011

Convention 2011

Mr. President, Chairman, fellow Officers and Club Delegates.

It is appropriate at this our annual convention to thank all those who have contributed to our sport in Meath over the past 12 months.  To all my fellow officers a word of thanks for your continued dedication and commitment.  To our RDO Bart Rogers for facilitating the continuing development of our coaches and athletes.  I would also like to pay a particular word of thanks to our Chairman, Brendan Meade, for his tireless work in representing the county board at meetings and events throughout the county, province and country.

To our selectors, club coaches, parents and athletes who have competed on and supported county cross-country, relay and national league teams throughout the year, a special word of thanks.  In what is primarily an individual sport it is heartening to see athletes willing to compete for their county, often not in their principle event.

Thanks are also due to Sharon and her dedicated team in the Sports Development Office for all the work they do to support the many events during the year.  Equally deserving of thanks are Moira and Paul on the Primary Schools Development team.  For many children they will be their first point of contact with the sport.  The positivity and enthusiasm they bring to their work has served to enhance the experience for all involved.  Also we should not forget those landowners, clubs and venues that have taken on the responsibility of hosting athletics events over the past year.

It was good to see the increase in the number of clubs attending county board meetings.  Aside from our Convention, county board meetings are where the majority of decisions affecting athletic competition are taken.  I would encourage all clubs to consider putting forward candidates for county board positions.  The county can only benefit from the injection of new blood and talent.

With 2010 being a voting congress year I would like to thank all those who gave of their time to attend as delegates.  While not all elections or motions went our way we can be satisfied with the progress that was made.

The Road Race League has now matured and is now a permanent fixture in the athletics calendar.  I commend those host clubs who have embraced the format and who continue to work with it to make it the success that it has proved to be.  This year we have taken the decision to widen it to all open race events taking place in the county.  With the addition to the calendar of various new events this brings the number of potential events to 15.  Clubs are reminded that the success of the league is dependent on the prompt publication of full results.

The Inter-Club Track & Field League benefited from the addition of a second stream of competition.  The close finishing positions and the consistent scoring over the four legs gives testament to the renewed efforts by the competing clubs.

Finally, I would like to thank you all for coming here this evening.  Hopefully we will make good progress through the agenda and leave at a decent hour, with a job well done.

Development Officers Report to Meath AAI Convention 2011

The secondary schools Track & Field competition was held on 21st April in Claremont Stadium.  18 schools were involved this year, 2 more than last year.  St Peters College Dunboyne once again took both the girls and boys school titles but by a smaller margin.   Next years competition should be a closer contest.
The secondary schools Cross Country competition was put back till the 17th November due to the number of cross country races taking place at the end of September and start of October.  The schools felt that the extra preparation time was beneficial, however, it coincided with Christmas exams and therefore some schools did not attend.  16 schools did compete, an increase of 3 on last years figures.  As always the grounds and conditions at Gormanston College were perfect.
The wintry weather conditions which we experienced in December affected a number of events both at county and national level.  Due to cancellations and rescheduling at a national level, this left few free dates which meant the new interclub cross country competition did not take place as planned.  Hopefully it will get up and running next year.
The primary schools Cross Country competition has got underway.  Again this was affected by weather conditions, however, we hope to run the county final for this in March.  Any schools still wishing to take part can do so.  We also hope to run a similar competition consisting of 4 x 100m relays in May.
The implementation of the Little Athletics Programme in the primary schools has continued and is still proving to be very popular.  The importance of the work done by Paul Tully, Moira Peppard and previously Adam Geoghegan in the schools cannot be underestimated.  Some clubs have experienced an increase in membership following a visit from the team to the local school.  Perhaps the most encouraging point is that schools are continually requesting them to return on a more regular basis.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped out over the course of the year.  Thanks especially to Sharon, Oprah and all the girls in the office.  These events would not have been as successful without all the help we received.
There have been many ideas and plans developed to improve the standards of not only our athletes but also athletics within the county, eg  the development squad and the floodlit runs being just two.  Sadly we have not fully availed of these and they are missed opportunities.  Yes we have some very good athletes who can compete at a National level and who have brought pride to both club and county.  However, if we want this trend to continue then we should be focusing on raising the standards within our clubs and supporting such events and suggestions as mentioned above.

Chairman’s Address to Meath AAI Convention

Chairman’s Address to Meath AAI Convention
Firstly on behalf of all of us I would like to thank our county president Paddy Joyce who has come to all our functions and events throughout the year. On my own behalf I want to extend a special word of thanks to my fellow officers for all their hard work during the year because without their combined efforts it would be impossible to successfully run the programme of events that we have on our yearly calendar. I want to thank all the clubs who gave their own facilities or organised facilities to host our championships. I would like to thank Philip for all his work during the year especially on the IT end. During the summer I brought Philip fishing on the Boyne and it opened up a whole new past-time for him in spite of the fact that the only thing he caught was a wet foot as the waders I gave him had a slight hole in them.  A special thanks is due to Treasurer Rita Brady who keeps a very good rein on our finances. This year Rita would like to take a break from her position for the year and I on your behalf and my own would like to wish her well and good health knowing that we will see her again over the summer. Thanks is also due to Sharon & her staff in the Sport’s Development Programme, who do so much of the clerical work for us, which facilitates the efficient running of all our events and also to Moira Peppard and her team that bring athletics to the schools. Moira’s & Paul’s enthusiasm and hard work looks as if it will pay dividends with the probability of a new club in the Carnaross area. I would like to thank our PRO and all the local media for their coverage of our events throughout the year and the Meath Local Sports Partnership who are doing so much to promote active lifestyles within the community.

It has been a good year both collectively and individually for Meath Athletics. Our juvenile athletes continue to make their mark at National level as is evident by the numbers receiving certificates at our Annual Awards Night. We tend to be stronger in the field events but this year we have seen the emergence of new talent in the younger age groups especially at the National Cross Country Championships.

At this stage I have to thank Gerard Heery for all his work as the senior team manager. The cross-country season was an unqualified success this year with both juvenile & senior teams doing well. It is great to see that next year both the men’s and ladies teams will compete in section A of the Inter Counties. The disappointing aspect of the senior athletics was the National T&F League team which in 2010 did not seem to have the commitment to the competition that we had in previous years – now maybe this was due to our young team that had quite a few athletes tied up with exams. For 2011 we would hope to renew that commitment and make sure that we are in Tullamore for final’s day in August.

Once again we have increased our membership and we finished the year with about 2400 members.  This is due to the more active development, coaching for all levels of athletes within the county and that we have more events for all levels of athletes so that the athletics year does not end for some with just the Meath T&F Championships. At this stage I must acknowledge the help & support that we receive from our RDO Bart Rogers. The development squad while not running totally smoothly was a useful learning curve and this year we should be able to teak the system to make it run more efficiently and be of benefit to more up and coming athletes. Thanks is due to Maggie Higgins, Brigid Clarke and John Holian in Development and Tom Clinton in Coaching for all their hard work in this regard.

The beach run was again a great success and I would like to especially thank the members of my own club for their in help making the BBQ successful and to Paddy Mangan for marking out the course.

Where do we go from here? Last year I said we can build our membership to 2500 but there is no doubt that with application and hard work we can surpass that. It will entail building on our coaching programmes, pooling our expertise, group training, development squads etc. Again there are areas in the county where we need to establish an athletic club especially the North of the county which is bereft of athletics but it seems likely that we will get a club started in Carnaross.  However we have a new club in Slane and the great thing about the club in Slane was that the locals came to us looking about setting up the club, which means that there is good local interest. We will help them in every way possible both financially and with coaching expertise to get them started in their first year so that they can get off to a good start.

Last year I mentioned we could have an interesting Congress in April 2010. That we did but unfortunately Michael Heery was unsuccessful in his bid to become President.

Finally, I wish all our athletes, officials, county officers and club members a very successful and enjoyable year.

Public Relations Officer Report Meath Athletics Board 2011 Convention 2 February 2011

Public Relations Officer Report
Meath Athletics Board 2011 Convention

2 February 2011

As in each of my previous years in the role of public relations officer for this board I have given my best to cover all athletic activities in the county.  I have tried at all times to give clubs in the county unbiased and balanced coverage. We in Meath are lucky to have some quality local papers, proper local radio coverage and access to national exposure through the Irish runner and the Evening Herald.

The coverage which our sport receives in the press and radio continues to be vitally important and should not be underestimated. We should be trying to complement this by increasing our use of "new media" to promote and report through websites and social networks.

There have been a few changes in the media during the past year. Two local newspaper titles went out of business and one was reincarnated. The decision of Meath County Council to discontinue the  "Communities Online Together" system was a big blow to the county board and the clubs which had use of that great facility. The great value of the system was its ease of use. The high number of visitors which the county site and various club site attracted proved its effectiveness, importance and impact.I am very grateful to Meath County Council and particularly Siobhan O'Connor and Joe Tighe for their help with COT down the years. I would recommend the use of a blog to any club which wants to get back online in a manner which does not require massive techie knowledge.

The expanded race league for 2011 presents an opportunity to promote the
sport among recent recruits. The local press seem to be more attracted to
these mass participation events. The reasons for this are obvious, some
local races have doubled their entries over the past 5 years. In these times of financial restraint good press coverage is important when trying to maintain or acquire commercial sponsorship. Clubs must be on the ball with race reports and photographs to maximise the impact in a positive way.

People who enter road races nowadays like to see internet reports, complete results and photos sooner rather than later. During the year there were a number of references to the need for uniformity in the format of the race league events. A good place to start would be with age categories and prompt reports and results. Publicity is another aspect which can and should be coordinated this year with a referral system incorporated into race entry and results materials. A media launch would be a good way to raise the profile of the races and their promoting clubs.

County  championships in cross country and track and field had good coverage last year.  Thespecial promotions done with schools were successful. I feel that we are not fully developing the potential of the primary schools development project. Better communication and advance notice for clubs would leave them better positioned to encourage new members on foot of the visits.

Clubs have to keep knocking on the door with press reports about their members at Leinster and national level. The schools championships results are very often as a result of coaching and encouragement from club level. Clubs should be quicker off the mark to claim the credit. This is the bonus coverage. We need our young achievers to feel appreciated. The best way to achieve this is to publicly give them the credit they are due.

The importance of social networking sites especially Facebook was apparent
in a number of athletics promotions in the county. I can vouch for the effectiveness of this in the fact that my own clubs promotion The Braveheart 5km Trail Run had nearly two hundred positive responses in advance. It meant we were reasonably confident of a good crowd on the night. Last Sunday morning a duathlon in Summerhill had its entire entry list filled in advance on Facebook.  There were similar promotions undertaken by Dunshughlin AC, Dunboyne AC and St Brigids during the past year.

The race pre entry systems used by some of the clubs in the road race league
has proven to be a great way to bring in many non affiliated athletes. It has helped increase revenue from increased entries and gone back into club development.

I continue to be disappointed by the apathy of some clubs towards publicity and promotion. In mid January I emailed nearly sixty contacts throughout the county requesting information about their clubs for inclusion on the new blog and for Leinster Athletics . At the time of writing this report I am disappointed by the fact that less than fifty per cent of clubs have responded to my requests for basic club information. Yesterday I received a breakdown from Athletics Leinster confirming details requestedd only came from five clubs. In addition  the contact details of three others was known due to them having representation at Leinster. I think you will agree that this represents a  "moderate to poor" response.

The local press and radio have been helpful again this year in their coverage. I find them to be cooperative and responsive. It is up to individual clubs to appoint people who can promote their club activities. Athletics must face up to the challenge that if we want to improve our coverage in local media it is up to us to provide the news. Locally and
nationally gaelic games, soccer, horse racing and increasingly rugby enjoy the lions share of media space. That is a matter of fact. Change will come when all clubs improve their act.

During the year I have received help with reports and photos from Gerard
Heery, Paddy Mangan, Brendan Meade and Chris Grant at events I was absent
from , thanks to you all .

In summary I thank my fellow officers for their cooperation during the year,
Sharon in the sports development office, the sports editors, reporters,
photographers ,the AAI & Athletics Leinster webmaster..

Well done Thomas Moran

Well done to Dunshaughlin AC runner Thomas Moran, who finished 6th in the senior boys 6000m race at the North Leinster Schools Cross Country Championships in the grounds of DCU today. In the leading group of 10 early on, he managed to pick up a few places over the 4 laps and finished strongly for a top 6 position. He has qualified for the Leinster Championships in Santry on Wednesday 16th Feb.
