Success for Meath athletes in Tullamore XC

The Athletics Ireland Woodies novice and uneven ages cross country
championships took place on Sunday 16 January at Charleville Demesne,
Tullamore. The local club Tullamore Harriers used one of the best cross
country courses in Ireland for the national deciders which had been deferred
from mid December due to weather.

There were a number of good performances from the new crop of distance
talent emerging in Meath. The Star of the Sea club has turned out some
notable middle distance runners who clearly benefit from their training
regime at Ardgillan Castle when it comes to cross country racing. On Sunday
it was the turn of Andrew Coscoran to lay down a marker for the future. He
bid his time in the leading group for the early stages of the under 15 boys
race. At the bell it himself and Conor Christie stretched ahead from the
other leaders. At the top of the only significant climb on the course he
pushed on  for home. From there on over the final kilometre he put seventy
or eighty metres between himself and his nearest rival Conor Christie who in
turn had a safe margin over third placed Padraig Moran.

In the younger age groups Eoin Smith from Tara AC led Meath to fourth place
in the inter county competition when finishing second in the boys under 13
race. The next Meath runner across the line was Alan Monaghan, Bohermeen AC
in fourth place. The county team ran very well in this race to finish
fourth.

The best Meath club performance on the day was in the girls under 11 race
where  third placed Sarah Clarke led her club colleagues from Na Fianna AC
to third place in the inter clubs competition and the county to fourth. The
Na Fianna squad was completed by Amy Clarke, Emma Neary, Sara Daly and
Aideen Slattery. In the under 11 boys race the leading Meath runner was
Shane Hanley , St Brigids AC who finished  a very good 10th place.

The under 19 girls had an exciting tussle over the finishing straight
between long time leader Mary Mulaire, North Laois and Mary Ann O'Sullivan
who produced a kick that brought her into the lead and victory. Fourth place
in this race went to Shauna Moore from Dunshaughlin AC who is establishing
herself at the forefront of the very competitive womens junior distance
ranks. The county team finished second to Dublin and included her clubmate,
Shauna Moran who put in a storming final two kilometres to finish twefth two
places ahead of Rachel Neary.  Track specialist Elaine Plunkett completed
the scoring quartet.

Leinster win for women

The Leinster Junior & Senior Cross Country Championships hosted by St. Senan’s AC in Kilmacow, Co. Kilkenny last Sunday saw the Meath womens team retain the senior cross country title. The womens race over 5k consisted of one small lap and two large laps over a generally flat course, which was broken by one short steep decline and on the opposite side of the field a short sharp climb.

From the gun Aoife Talty (Raheny Shamrocks) went into the lead closely followed by Meath athlete Fiona Mahon (Donore Harriers). With the first lap completed Talty had opened up a slight lead on Mahon with Aoife Brady back in 6th or 7th place. A few places further back were Sharon Monaghan (Fr. Murphy AC) and Crona Brady (Sportsworld AC). Aoife Brady (Sportsworld AC) made great headway through the second lap and as the athletes embarked on their last lap Talty had consolidated her lead but it looked that Aoife would challenge Fiona Mahon for the silver medal. While at one stage Aoife had cut Fiona’s lead to 10m the Donore Harrier’s girl dug deep and over the final kilometre she again pulled away from Aoife and made sure of the silver medal. Meanwhile Crona Brady finished 11th and with Sharon Monaghan coming home in 18th place the team had a total of 34pts to take the title from Offaly with 70pts and Kilkenny losing on count-back also with 70pts in third place.

The junior ladies race over 3k also had a Meath interest with Dunshaughlin athlete Shauna Moore having a great race when taking the silver medal. The race was won by Mary Ann O’Sullivan (Tinryland AC) with Shauna well clear of Megan Morrissey (Thomastown AC) in third place. Next weekend sees Shauna leading out the Meath U19 girl’s team in the All Ireland U19 Cross Country Championships and she was very happy to have got a good 3k race in preparation for next weeks longer 5k event in Tullamore.

Meath athletes at Leinster Awards

Three Meath athletes received Leinster Star awards at the Leinster athletics
presentation night in the Seven Oaks Hotel, Carlow on Saturday night. Sinead
Reynolds, Cushinstown AC was the top Meath juvenile female athlete at
Leinster level with medal winning performances in sprints and long jump in
the indoor and outdoor championships. Jamie Murtagh, St Andrews won the male
juvenile award after success in the high jump with a best effort of 1.65m at
the provincial championships, and silve at the indoors. The top Meath senior
athlete at Leinster level last year was David Tobin, Trim AC who won the
under 23 title, the indoor seniors and was runner up in the outdoor
championships in June.
Cushinstown AC took the Leinster Shield for the club with the best combined
results in the Leinster under 9 to 11 championships last summer. the future
looks very bright for the east Meath club which continues to turn out
promising athletes under the guidance of Dessie Gough and Paddy Joyce.
